Asbestos / Mesothelioma

Introduction.

Almost 40 years ago, our firm was built on helping injured workers. Over the years, many workers across the country were exposed to asbestos products. Asbestos was originally mined and used commercially for fireproofing, insulation, and sound absorption. Asbestos was popular among manufacturers and builders in the late 19th century because of its resistance to heat and electrical and chemical damage. Workers would inhale and ingest asbestos fibers that would remain in the lungs and cause serious disease, including mesothelioma.

What Is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that is almost always caused by exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is toxic, and the inhalation of asbestos fibers can cause serious illnesses, including mesothelioma.

What Are The Symptoms Of Mesothelioma?

Shortness of breath, weight loss, chest wall pain, abdominal pain, a persistent raspy or dry cough, coughing up blood and the appearance of lumps under the skin on the chest are among the symptoms of mesothelioma. Symptoms often arise 15 to 50 years after initial exposure to asbestos.

How Is Mesothelioma Diagnosed?

Mesothelioma can be suspected on a simple chest x-ray or CT scan. It will then be confirmed with a tissue sample. If you have had previous asbestos exposure, it is best to seek immediate medical advice. This can alert your doctor to the possibility of an asbestos-related disease such as mesothelioma. Your doctor will recommend regular chest x-rays and pulmonary function tests to monitor for adverse effects of asbestos inhalation. Early detection can improve your prognosis.

What Are The Treatment Options For Malignant Mesothelioma?

Among treatment options are surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and immunotherapy. Chemotherapy is the only treatment for mesothelioma that has been proven to improve survival in clinical trials. The disease progresses quickly when symptoms appear. As a result, the unfortunate prognosis is that many victims will die within 2 years of diagnosis.
